WRiF TOPICS ("by "Moturoa.") All roads will lead to Piliaaia to-day, visitors comiuy irm all parts oi tlie punince, and as far south as iMarton and Wanganui. Judging .by the lonjj acceptance list the racing should ue well worth witnessing, and provided iue preseat line weather holda a record gathering, is assured. The club intends launching out on a big programme of improvements this season, so that flnancial success to-day will just come at the right time- The prospects of the various runners have already been traversed in these columns, and nothing more remains but to wish Mr P. Riley and his confreres a successful and enjoyable time to-day.

Punters had an in-and-out time at Tauhereuikau oa Friday. Vaseovia hopped off by paying a "stunning prio# in the Hack Welter, and Chimera carried on the good work by easily accounting for Trentham Rose and other fancied ones in the Russell Handicap. Nystad was backed for a heap of money in the Autumn Handicap, but llydrus finished best and beat the favorite home. Then the tide turned, and Red Signal, Miss Gold, Kiltess, Battle Array and Rebekah. strolled home, bringing more pvciwment than money to the public. Reliekah, as usual, paid a Desert Gold price.

Rangitikei weights are guaranteed to give pickers brain fag for a weefc or two. In the cup Nobleman heads the list with 9.5. a weight he is well capable of carrying if as fit as his admirers assert Rewipoto has hardly deserved 9.3, and will be busy conceding 12 lbs to Depredation. The latter reads better than All Over, Rude and Nystad, ami Ro,-e Pink should account for mc-st of the lesser lights, though Master Moutoa and Bingham are well enough treated. Parisian Diamond has nat done much recently, and 9.13 may anchor him in the Scott Memorial Handicap. All Over is also well cared for, and at a difference, of 2 lbs Inah appears best treated. Kipling's form at Wanganui may not have been correct, but he will have to improve considerably on that to have a chance with 8.6. If the winner is destined to come from tlio middle of the handicap, Jutland, who is daintily handled with 7.11, may be the one to score. None of the lightweights look to he class enough to have more than rough chances.

The treatment meted out to Alteration and Movement in the Ohakea Hurdles is interesting Alteration is given 10.5, which is not prohibitive providing that he jumps well- Movement gets in with 9.7, and is apparently "chanced" as non-stayer. Whether the handicapper will prove correct remains to he seen, but Mr P. .Johnson certainly has some encouragement to make the trip. The Ohakea Hurdles are run over a mile and three-quarters, and the distance is a quarter-mile shorter on the second day. Outside the New Plymouth horses Ore Ore and Lord Nelson have nothing to grow] about. Big fields are likely to contest the minor event'. Paddington Green, (Hyginas and Dingle have been given a chance in the Parewaimi Welter, and Hallow, Rajput, Idle Talk, Tempo and Gold Problem in the other races. The programme for the Waimare Plains Trotting Club's .annual meeting, to be held on the Ha.wera racecourse at Easter, is now. engaging attention. Tljc chief handicap event, the Wnimnte Plains Cup, will he worth 34." sovs, and the other races will he' as follows: Eitham, Handicap, of 175 sovs. one mile; Tarnnaki Futurity Stakes, of 150 sovs. one mile and a half: Hftwera Handicap, of 15(1 sovs. two miles:" Anroa Maiden Handicap, oi 100 sovs. one mile nnd a half; Normanhv Handicap, Of 1 Of) sovs, one mile and a quarter: Rtrtitfnrd Handicap. of 100 sovs, one mile and a half: and District Handicap, of 90 sovs, one mile and a half. Tn all £I2OO will be given away in stakes, and such good prizes are sure to attract first-class horses from all parts of the Dominion Nominations close with Mr G. A. Holder. P.O. box 157, Hawera, on the 23th inst.
