LABOR UNREST.
RAILWAYMEN REFUSE COMPROMISE. . AGRICULTURAL DISPUTE UNSETTLED. deceived March 16, 5.5 p.m. Loudon, March 15. The railwaymen's conference passed 4. resolution refusing to compromise on the national programme, and instructed the executive to inform the Government to that effect in the strongest terms. It is understood that the companies have offered to make the war increasespermanent. The union executive will consider the situation on March 29. Labor's triple al« liance confers on March 21. Mr. Hankey states that the Coal Commission's report will be presented on March 20.
The Agricultural Wages Board failed to settle the Agricultural Laborers' Union's demands for twenty shillings increase weekly. The farmers offered five shillings. The union officials assert that the unrest is grave, and they demand an inquiry similar to that of the Coal Commission. They have summoned u national conference for April 12.
MINERS INSIST ON NATIONALISATION.
A SUGGESTED COUNCIL. Received March 10, 5.5 p.m. London, March 14. Giving evidence before the Coal Commission, William Straker, secretary of (he Northumberland Mines Association, said it was useless to ask the miners to refrain from striking unless the nationalisation of mines was approved, giving the miners joint control. Mr. Straker suggested that a council of five represi'iitutives be appointed by the Ministry of .Mines and five by the miners, to be empowered to open and work mines, .• and sell and distribute coal.—Aus. and N.Z.
