SCHOONER IN DISTRESS.

TOWED INTO WELLINGTON. Wellington, March 14. A strange sailing vessel was sighted gii Wellington heads last evening. She signalled for assistance and was towed into port. The vessel is the auxiliary schooner Elsie, from Nukualofa for Portland, Orcgan, with copra. After clearing the islands bad weather was encountered, and the vessel suffered damage to her jibboom. The extent of tjie repairs necessary being too great to assure a safe journey across the Pacific it was decided to come south for assistance. The passage occupied about 40 days. The Elsie put into Wellington in May, 1917, in a leaking condition while on a voyage from Port Pirie to San Francisco. It is anticipated that the repairs on the present occasion will occupy about a week.
