The Hurdle Race at Opunake is likely to take some picking, but whatever beats Speedwell Mao will have to run gooti time. Mr. Chaney's prad is pretty fit at present. Gameconk failed badly in the Waimate Cup. His recent track work has been g'.>oJ. hut probably he found ten furlong# too far for him.
The Maiden candidates at Opunake are not a very select lot, but Cadet, Jane Douglas, Applaud and Te Toa have all shown pace. Probably Cadet will be sent out favorite.
Hard tracks are causing lameness at present, and all round one hears complaints from trainers and horse-owners. Fair dinkum, do you think it will ever rain again?
If Metallum can get away with her opponents at Opunake she will take a lot of beating. Alf. Morse is very patient at the barrier, and possibly ho will get her well away. Fiery Cross has pulled up lame again, and will not be persevered with until the tracks get softer.
Trainer F. E, Jones waited to ride John Barleycorn at Waim&te,- but the Kest the Sarta gelding could do was to run second. His days of usefulness must be about over.
Uayberry, the imported son of Bayardo, is in v work again at Fordell. This handsome, importation will fis-uri l as 'it gelding the next time he sports ''silk.''

Eveiything points to a smj-ce-isful and enjoyable gathering It is reported that 'Mr. A Cameron, who races Lady Black. Galore, Idyllic, and other horses, is giving up the same. His colors have not been very successfid of late, and the upkeep of a string of racers nowadays is (as the bazßar maid said) "very c.o.stive"
An Auckland exchange reports that Mr E. Alison, jnr, intends appealing against the disqualification recently imposed upon him by the Hamilton Racing Club.

Racing is ii wonderful study.
