Crop«. -The crop in the old waterworks paddock has been harvested in good condition Tarrinii—This has been the chief work for the month and so long as the w.jathe: - remains good every advantage is being taken to push tarring ahead even at the expense of other works. Tip to date the following roads have been tar-sealed: Courtenay. Powderham, part of Daw«m, Wallace Place. Tttkapo part of Oarrington, Franklcy, Eliot and Avenii'S streets. The total length tarred is 5 miles 46 chains, varying from 13 to 34 feet. 1 mile 17 chains has been tarred twice and the second coat is now in pYogress. The area, tarred with first coat is 71 "in super yards. With one exception in Avenue Road, the tar has set down .veil. A short length, approximately 3 chains, in the road mentioned wili have attention when second coat is applied. I have had to order larger quantities of tar, as it has been coming to hand erratically. The rate of works ha 3 kept all the teams fully employed as well as the lorry. Devon Street.—One length has been repaired and opened for traffic. A second length has been opened up and is in progress- To save delay as much as possible, the penetration of bottom metal has been abandoned, and will be rolled and watered if necessary. The surface coating will be slightly thicker jn consequence. Delays have taken place for want of metal and prepared tarred materials which is now being overcome. Referring to the metal supply I shall be placing a report dealing with this most important question shortly. Crusher.—Teams have been employed in c.-.rting boulders to the crusher. T*mon Street Yard.—A fourth boiler Ms been erected and the fifth will he installed when necessary. The drying shed has been erected as far as the money would allow. Sept ; c Tank—A serious choking occurred in the detritus chamber on the 24th inst. Owing to the great volume of water flowing into the tank the ar-' resting filter is incapable of passing the; effluent. Thfe down pipe has therefore to be left open permanently. The tank cannot possibly cope with the in flow, and within twelve months quite a third if not more of the capacity will be lost. The council will shortly have to consider seriously the question of disposal of sewer matter. Miscellaneous work*.—Four private crossings have been put down, several chokes removed from the services an 4 sewers. Fennel has been cut in Fulford StreetfJovett Avenue—A request to roll this mid wa° received The road is worn so thin th.it nnvthinc less than recoatintr wit* me*.-il is useless- At present it would not stand scarifying. ' Reserve!.—The triangular plot at the terminus hotel has been cleaned up.
