THE PRICE OF BREAD.

GOVERNMENT TO RESIST ANY INCREASE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) March 12. The president of the Wellington Master Bakers' Association stated the other day that the retail price of bread, delivered, ought to be Is a loaf in order to give the baker a fair return. The president quoted figures in support of his statement. He said that flour was costing £ls 10s per ton, salt £l6 per ton, potatoes £l7 per ton, and chaff £l2 10s per ton. The shilling loaf is not likely to be added to the troubles of the consumer. The Minister for Agriculture mentioned to-day that the maximum price of flour was being reduced from £ls 10s to £ls per ton, and that many of the other prices quoted by the president of the Master Bakers' Assoiation were exaggerated. Salt could be bought at £lO per ton, potatoes at £6 to £8 per ton in the touth, and chaff at £8 15s per ton in Wellington. Fbur was being offered by millers at 5s per ton less than the gazetted maximum pi.'ce. The Minister indicated that the Government would resist an increase in the price of bread.
