DHURA DISTRICT.
EDUCATION FACILITIES. In accordance with instructions, the Tavanaki Education Board overseer submitted a special report to the Board yesterday, on the condition of the schools in the Ohura district, and also those in the Awakino district. The report, with the Board's decisions, is as follows:
Wairero (Junction of Ohura and Upper Ohura Roads), ve proposed schoolIn company with Messrs Jackson and Irvine I interviewed Mr Connelly in respect to signing over his interest in the proposed »ite. Although Mr Connelly agreed to hand c--?r his interest free he is now determined to have £24 for the site. In the event of the Board still sticking to this site it may be necessary to take it under the Public Works' Act. A grant has been mads for the school and the whole 'nutter has been hung up by the action of this settler. Mr Jackson has guaranteed on behalf of the settlers interested to find the totara piles and cart the material free from the Ongarue station.—lt was decided to ask the Department whether steps should he taken to acquire the land under the Public Works Act.
Paraketu.—l visited this school and met Messrs Cole and Parkes. The present whare used as p. school may be required any time. There is a suitable site given by Mr Parkes and these two settlers have agreed to cart the whole of the material from Waimiha station and erect the school on condition the Department will find the material. Mr Parkes will also fence, plough, and grass out the section. I think it is a very good offer and shows the settlers are quite willing to help themselves. I would recommend this receive favorable consideration.—lt was decided that plans be prepared and an application be made for a grant for the erection of a school.
Ararimu East.—Mr Carter kindly met me and explained the altered position in regard to their application for a school One settler with five children has come out to Okahuknra and others are going to Otunui. At present there are only two children about five years old without schooling. I would therefore recommend that no further action be taken in the matter at present. I ilso paid a visit to Te Wakarae. The new bridge over the stream to the school is not erected yet. I understand the timber is on the way. The section still requires fencing. AWAKINO DISTRICT. Mr Paseoe visited this district, and dealt with the matters referred to, and reports as follows: Marakopa.—Building in bad state, roof leaks badiy several sheets of iron being rusted through: spouting all down and no tank; poor lighting and ventilation; no fire can he lit in the fireplace. The building was erected about 14 years ago by odd labor; it was lined with white pine about IS months ago. There are two acres of land granted for school site opposite the present school and I would respectfully recommend that application be made for a new school on this site.—lt was resolved to apply for new school.
Moeatoa.—ln respect to this application for n school, Mr Paseoe met six settlers and they all agreed the proper site is f.ve acres situated three and ahalf miles further up the Kiriteliere stream from the present surveyed site and at the junction of the Mangakokopu and Riritehero roads. This "proposed site is part of a reserve and the settlers wish to secure the site readv for a school at some future time. At present there only six children of school age I would respectfully recommend the proposed site he secured and leave the matter of a half-time or household school to be dealt with by the Board ** ws resolved 'that the Board rent the buildmg suggested for use as a school at Moetatoa, and that a school be established.
