"We imperatively demand the immediate surrender of the entire German mercantile fleet." Admiral Hope then declared that the Commissioners were not empowered to listen to counter-proposals, whereupon the negotiations were suspended.
Frencli newspapers unitedly support Admiral Hope's attitude, declaring that Herr Scheidemann had instructed the plenipotentiaries to dispute the ground foot by foot.
Le Petit Journal declares that the German attitude is the result of a belief that Wilsonianism is weakening the Allies.
Le Journal says that the civilian delegates whom President Wilson insisted should stand beside Marshal Foch have weakened the Allies' hand. L'Echo do Paris, calls the attitude a feeble attempt at blackmail. We must compel submission, if necessary with guns and bayonets.—Renter.
