A BRUTAL ASSAULT.
ON A TEMPERANCE LECTURER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Duncdirij Last Night. A brutal assault was made on John McCartney, a temperance lecturer and organiser, at Roxburgh, at about 8.30 on Saturday night. McCartney, who hud been in the district for days organising in the interests of the party, was proceeding to the house of Mr. Michell, about half a mile outside of the town boundary, and when within a quarter of a mile of the house lie was accosted by a man who came round behind. Without warning, after muttering something about drink, the man attached McCartney, who promptly closed with his assailant. Another nion came on the scene suddenly, and "J'cCartnoy was struck on the head with a blunt instrument anl rendered unconscious. When he regained consciousnes he was lying on the side of the road, and reached Micbeil's house in an exhausted condition. Cuts on 1113 coat suggest an attempt was made to stab McCartney, his left arm and side being pierced in several places, and Tits left thieh bruised, but this is artriliuted to being dragged along the road. Th» victim, who is not seriously injured. has 4 no idea of the identity of his assailants.
