TRAMWAYMEN'S DEMANDS.

A SATISFACTORY SETTLEMENT. A settlement of the dianute between the tramway imployess and the New Plymouth Borough Council was readied on Friday night, when a conference between the parties, lasting from 10.30 till 330 a.m , took place, The union rcprepresentatives were accompanied by Mr W \asli, as adviser. The basis of the agreement is an advance of 3d per liour in the men's wages (the war bonus, which has up to the present been paid by the council, being discontinued! and an extra two days added to the annual holiday granted to the men. The minimum rates of pay will now be:— ■MOTORMEN. Per hour s. d. Ist grade, over 2 years' service 1 6 '2nd grade, over 1 year's service 1' 5J 3rd grade, under 1 year's service 1 5 CONDUCTORS. Per hour s. d. Ist grade, over 2 years' service 1 5 2nd grade, over 1 year's service 1 4} 3rd grade, under 1 year's service 1 4 Over time will be paid for on the basis of the agreement at present in force, and not on the new raie of wages. The new arrangement is to date from February 3, 1919. The agreement wiil involve the Borough in a considerable increase of expenditure and, although nothing has been decided yet, it is likely the patrons of the tramway service will be called upon to contribute towards the deficiency.
