STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt »Ueatitm.) CONTROL OF DOMAINS. Stratford, March 7A meeting of the Domain Board was held this afternoon, when there were present: Messrs G. S. Curtis (chairman), VV. I'. Kirkwood, K. McK. Moriaon, and T. H. Perm. The adjourned annual meeting was also held. A deputation from the Borough Council, consisting of the Mayor and Cr. Cameron, waited on the board as th 6 outcome of a petition from several ratepayers, and asked that the control of the reserves administered by the board be handed over to the Borough Council. All the members of the board expressed dissent to this request, but intimated willingness for the borough council to have representation on the board, provided the borough undertook to make a monetary contribution to the board's funds.

Members of the board asked the deputation to state .vhether they would oppose any attempt to remove the stone in the.Patea river between the suspension bridge and the Brecon Road. Both the Mayor and Cr. Cameron stp-.ed that they would not agree to the removal of the stone unless the question was decided by the ratepayers. Members of the board unanimously expressed the opinion that the removal of the stone from this length of the river would entirely spoil that part of the reserve as a beauty spot. It was suggested by the deputation thai if the borough council had control of the reserves a rate could be struck to provide the necessary funds for beautifying purposes. Concerning this statement a member of the board was strongly of opinion that street drainage and other works were ao urgently required in Stratford that he doubted whether it would be politic, and whether the ratepayers would agree to a rate being struck for the purposes under the eircumsiauces. Generally, all members of the Domain Board were averse to handing over the reserves, and it was pointed out that it was very questionable if under borough control the work would be as efficiently administered.

The spirit of both the deputation and members of the board in discussing the. matter was a happy one, and a hope was expressed that, while the Domain Board was not agreeable to hand over control, probably a practical scheme could be evolved whereby the beautifying of the reserves would be ensured in a way that would be mutually advantageous to bodies.
