AMENDMENT OF MINING LAWS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Thames, March 6. The Thames County Council liaa decided to join the Corclmandel Council in a conference on the revival of mining. It is intended to ask all local bodies in the Hauraki mining district to participate, with the object of altering the mires law, which was framed thirty wars ago for conditions entirely dis similar to the present. The conference Is expected to be held at an early date, ami its recommendations placed before the Minister.

Christchurch, Last Night. The Defanra Department has decided that is is advisable to hare a military officer attached to district staffs, acting in both a military and semi-official capacity. in the direction of furnishing bels to returning soldiers. To fill the'position, so far as Canterbury is concerned, the Department has appointed Lieut.Colonel 0. B. Erereton, who has seen servics on Gallipoli and in France. Ho will work in conjunction with the District Repatriation Board and Returned Soldiers' Association for the good of returning men. A WOMAN ARRESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. In connection with the death of a girl named Friede Ruby Sandel, the police arrested at Sandy Bay a married woman named Emma Caroline Fletcher, a resident of Nelson, on a eharge of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. She was brought befoie the court at Motueha, and remanded to appear at Nelson on Saturday.
