WORKERS' HOMES.
AUCKLAND SCHEME DEFERRED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The City Council to-night adopted a recommendation ly the committee of the wlio'e that proposals for the erection of workers' dwellings, iii connection with which a loan of £250,0110 was proposed, be deferred, /the report stated that though therfe were in the city a number of dwellings not desirable, the buildings by-laws and sanitary inspection were sufficient safeguards against them being or becoming a menace to public health, further, having regard to the existing financial obligations of the council and in view of the reports from the county's land advisers, the committee was of 'opinion that action might be deferred, at any rate for the present. The committee was also of opinion that while several areas in the thickly populated portion of the city migrtl with advantage be remodelled, any such policy should not be adopted at present owing to the financial obligations already undertaken. Another aspect for consideration was the high cost of building material and the difficulty of obtaining many lines. The council adopted a resolution that the Works Committee be asked to consider the question of the possibility of remjdelling an area in the city, and'providing some small houses for workers. Tt was resolved tha< the Government be urged to form a model suburb for workers' houses at Orakei.
