The Minister of Education was approached by the University Council this morning for a further grant of £2OOO to complete the home science building. Tho deputation also asked the depart-, ment to liquidate a portion of the debenture debt of £7OOO, and invited Ms. sympathy with the scheme for the chil-, dren's department at the museum for. geography and ethmology teaching. ..,.- , The Hon. J. A. Hanaii sanction of a giant of £IOOO for' home science, which he could give without consultation with the Cabinet. He promised the debenture debt would be considered when the whole subject of the finances of university colleges was considered. He also expressed sympathy with the scheme to interest children in natural objects and stimulate their observation powers, and said that the establishment of a chair of ethmology would be approved under conditions. The Minister took tho opportunity of saying that from reasonable applications made it appeared that the increased vote for school buildings was not enough and would have to be increased beyond £400,000, where it now stood. The Hon. Hanan inspected the property and recommended it for purchase for a probation home. The Minister proceeds to Christehurch to-morrow.
