THE BUDGET. DEFICIT OF 4j MILLIONS. A HOPEFUL OUTLOOK. Received Feb. 3, 8.15 p.m. Delhi, Feb. 27. The Treasurer, in delivering his financial statement in the Legislative Council, said that had India not accepted the charge for an exfaa 200,000 troops for the war the past year would have shown a surplus of over eight millions sterling, instead of a deficit of 4J millions. He estimated that the war expenditure would reach 41>4 millions, and the estimated revenue would be 80 millions to meet an estimated expenditure of 85 millions. It would be necessary to raise six millions from the excess profits tax. This would leave a Bhrplus of £900,000. The depression following the war period was disappearing, and he looked forward to an industrial awakening. The war had taught the people to live less extravagantly. India's position was strong, but economy wad necessary.— Reuter.
