THE OTIRA TUNNEL.
DEMAND FOR COMPLETION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehureh, Last Night. At a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-day the following motion was carried: That in view of the great importance of the West Coast railway, both from economic and financial standppints, the Minister of Publi.c Works be requested to divert labor from other obviously less important works so that the Otira tunnel, with its connecting power system, may be more rapidly pushed forward to completion. M"r. Holland (Mayor of Christehureh), who seconded the motion, said that considering the amount of money lying idle in connection with the Otira tun Del it was scandalous that the work was not. pushed on to completion. He was satisfied they had to take the gloves off and use almost physical force in securing Canterbury's rights.
