DEMOCRATS AND LEAGUE OF NATIONS. PRESIDENT REFUSES SPECIAL SESSION. JAPANESE BASE IN MEXICO. Received Feb. 28, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Feb. 27. The Democratic leaders told President Wilson that they were bent on an extraordinary session of Congress to debate the League of Nations. President Wilson reiterated his intention to refuse such a session. President Wilson admitted that the clause referring to the country's geographic position entitling it to extra armament also applied to Britain, whose navy is not likely to be reduced, and to France, who required to safeguard her frontiers. In reference to Japan having a base in Mexico, Presi>nt. Wilson replied that the League of Nations would doubtless prohibit it. If not, the United States must act to secure her own preservation.—Aus. Mitchell Palmer has been nominated Attorney-General for the United States. JEALOUSY FOR MONROE DOCTRINE Washington, Feb. 27. President Wilson had a private conference with members of the Senate. Ho Joes not wish a pronouncement of Congress at present on the scheme for the f eaguc of Nations and objects to a Congressional committee proceeding to Paris. He does not object to certain amendments designed to prevent the upsetting of the Monroe doctrine, though it is feared it will lie impossible to devise such changes without impairing the |lcague's powers.—Aus.-N.Z.
