Auckland, Last night "This is one of a series of charges to come against about SO JugO-Slava who have absolutely refused to obtjr the notices to report for National Service," declared Selwjn Mays in conducting a prosecution against a Dalmatian named Nicholas Erceg, brought before Mf Wilson, S.M., to day, on a charge of having refi-sed to do National Service. Mr Mays said Ereeg kept a small shop, and was one of five brothers, none of whom had done any National Service Thl* man had been sent a notice early in December to proceed to drainage works, but ha did not go, and made no communication with the Commissioner. Mr Mays added that some time ago several Jngo-Slavs were prosecuted and imprlsonec 1 , and after that there was laasdiffioulty with them, but recently tbephhad been another outbreak of troubftf *«• cnmpnnii'd )>v insolence and by various stratagems to avoid National Service. Defendant, stated he had lonff ago written to the Government declaring his deo-irn to help to win he war. Mr Mavs: Yes. Thev will do anything except fight or work. Defendant was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
