THE WOOL MARKET.
PRICES AND PROSPECTS RE.VIEWED. London, Feb. 21. Mr Goldfinch, presiding at the Wool Council, said that owing to the epidemic in Australia there was a shortage of wool and New Zealand stocks in England would not reach a comfortable level before July, and it probably would be necessary to limit purchases for Belgium, France and Italy in view of America's contract with Australia and New Zealand. Our import programme does not provide for any sales to America through London. t Mr GojfJlinch paid a tribute to the handsome attitude of Australia and New Zealand throughout regarding the prices, ,bui it was obviously impossible to continue. British manufacturers favored the position of obtaining supplies at much below American values. The department proposed to keep the prices as far as possible equal to that of cheaper supplies from any part of the world. The department would facilitate private importing and free dealing, thus ensuring continuous supplies from all quarters, and would use its influence a3 holders of Australian and New Zealand wool to stabalise the prices somewhat below the present level. He promised to consider the Council's unanimous demand for an immediate moderate reduction of issue of prices and fixing the prices for eight months instead of a series of downward alteration. There will be official announcement next week. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Asoc. . ■ i..
