GENERAL. With the genial spell of dry weather farmers and others are now able tu do someiiiiiijr else besides harvesting. Recently a party of tennis qfitlmsia-sts from Uuiroa made the journey to W'hangamomuna, and although severely defeated, losing by % to i 4, they had an enjoyable outing. Hospitality was showered on them with a lavish hand Before departing .Mr Martin, on belmli of visitors, thanked the Whanga* momonaites for tfce pleasant outing, and expressed a wish that the two teams should again meet on the tennis courts. Mr Strombon, on behalf of the homo club, reciprocated these expressions and an effort will be made 10 liavo another bout before the weather breaks. The success attending the efforts oi Mrs H. E. Abraham towards securing the Gavigan chair must be very pleasing to her. ■ Gavigan, it may not be generally known, is a bed-ridden patient in the hospital here, and Mrs Abraham is collecting the necessary funds to secure a chair that will permit the sufferer to move round with a little more freedom than at present. Recently, Miss Smith, Douglas, dre;sed and presented a doll for the funds and as a result of T?p.oli>eifh's persuasive powers the doll realised the satisfactory sum of £4 4sOther contributions received are £1 from Mr Walsli and family, 10s from Rev and Mr o - Howard, and Miss 01*ary, ani 5s each from Messrs Donald Fraset (TTruti), Martin (Waipuku), and J. Lister.

A meeting of importance to the whole of Taranaki will be held at the mw.ioipal chambers on Tuesday afternnnr. Delegates from several loen.l bodies are expected, the subject matter beiiic the desirability of urging upon the Government the necessity for speeding un the railway.'

Ir. replv to many inquiries I wish to »tali> that Mrs ?. X. Jones, one of tb'. boarders at the Thames Hotel, Auckland, which was destroyed by fire, and who was herself badly turned, is a daughter of Mrs Kovaleski, well and favorably known at Tuna (Midhirst)-

A large contingent of Taranaki men are expected home this evening. Stratford has several soldiers included, namely. Bombardier SSiea.han, Trooper Wade, Privates Epping, Roberts, Harre, Mills, Perry and Lvford.

Our resident engineer, Mr H. H. Sharp, was elected a member of the Council of Civil fcr.crineers at the conference held at Auckland. Mr F. Basham, at one t ! w» encinecr to the Eltham County Council, has been elected vice-president. 'lreat preparations are being made by the swimming club for the carnival to be held early in March. It is anticipated that, swimmers from all parts of the province will compete in the various events, a most varied programme having 'been drawn up, races being set down for adults, girls and boys.

The welcome tendered to the Toko soldiers at the Coronation Hall last evening proved a great success. Tne men back from the front greatly appreciated the efforts made by the Patriitie Committee and the district to make them feel "at home." whilst Mr W. TT. Were, as chairman, had a congenial task expressing pleasure at the return of the men and at the successful results secured by the Allied forces against the Kaiser and his hordes. A very fine musical programme was submitted, the vocal by Mrs McLaren being particularly pleasing. Miss Kelly (piano) and Mr S. Parker (cornet) supplied the music for the dance, and Messrs Kilpat-l-if-k and Gtfrnhocier carried out the onerous duties of M.'s C. to the satisfaction of all.

Those in need of high class furniture are directed to the sale advertised by T. Lamason on no-count of Mr 15. Stevens, to 'be held at Ins residence, Juliet street, north, Stratford, to-morrow (Tuesday), at one o'clock.

In Broadway there is a shop that is always attractive. Goods are displayed in a tasteful manner, the quality is of tlie best, and the prices lowest on the market. Thb combination is hard to beat and is the secret of the great success attained by Mr. C. E. James. This is no wild statement hut a fact. Just now he is offering a wide range of ladies' handbags that are exceptionally good value, whilst his crockery and antimony ware is worthy of particular notice.—Advt.
