WANGANUI NOTES.
(By "Moturoa") The weather promises fine for to-day's races. The acceptances are good all round. Form Up and Hendra should carry the bulk of the money in the Autumn Handicap, while Dusky Eve will again run well in the Wuiiganui Stakes. First Line won so easily on the first clay that a rise of lfllbs may not trouble liirn in the Fordell Hurdles. Gloaming will touch a very short price in the Wanganui Guineas. Paddington Green had bad luck on Thursday, but may fare better in the Harrison Hack Handicap. Amythas ia expected to show up better in the Okoia Handicap, and Rebekah and Jutland will have another duel in the Matarawa Hack Handicap. Silver Link and 80-Peep may start favorites in the Farewell Handicap. There was a great crowd at Wanganui \ mi Thursday. In fact, it was hard to! get about on the course. The crowd' swamped the spacious grandstand and slopped all over the lawns. The only! tiling that stood the strain was the splen-1 did totalisator, and that day the machine i iiandled £42,309, an increase of £5558 on | last year's figures. The public had a I day out, no less than six favorites stroll-1 ing home in front, while the successes | of Dusky Eve and Silver Link gave the j double merchants a bad jolt. It was a I great day's sport, despite the weather | fundi Lions—drizzling rain falling in the I early part of the afternoon--but everybody appeared to enjoy the good menu : of racing served up. I Proceedings opened with the Stewards'i il'av.dieap. '"Form l'p and i'addingtnn ! Crcvn were reserved for races later in! ilie day, and niii? horses went to the post. Rude was a few pounds better j liivorite' than Kiwlilig and Tigritiya, the i i'io carrying threc-cp-iailei's of ihe in- ' wnlmenta on the tole. From a str,ag-1 gliiig start Tigritiya led from Kipling Hid Otara, the last to leave the mark i;eing Kude and Robur. Tigritiya was still in front as they came to the turn, !ml Rude and Hendra had run into handy positions. Rude finished best, and beat; ! igritiya home by a neck, Hendra being i ijiree lengths away third, and Robur,! Bagdad and Otara close up. The winner 'lid well to score from a bad position, Kipling ran badly. iUeUllunv Hold Boy and Hallowdropped out of the Petre Hack Handicap, >i.viug a good licid of fifteen. Active and ■ 'utillion were bracketed, and Rebekah, •Jutland and the coupled -pair were each ■! '.rusted with over a. Thou apiece. The ..ivorites had the race to themselves,! i'-'bekah leading practically all the way, .-.nd winning nicely from Jutland by half, .. length. Active was a fair third, and i hen came Wonder, Red Signal and Cotiliiun. Jutland got away fairly well, but L. Morris brought him along too quickly in the middle stages of the race, and he was unable to sustain his long run. All started in the Westmerc Hurdles, and VV'aipunoa was backed as if he was a •'moral." There was good money for Loyal Arch and Golden Grafton, but First Line and Rio were neglected. First Line, aided by his feather-weight, won from end to end, and, jumping best of the crowd, never looked like getting beaten. Loyal Arch and Golden Grafton tri?d in turn to catch the lightweight, but he went too fast. Waipunoa was last away, »ud was aeyer danaerou*. Arlington fell
at the third fence, but Flynn was unhurt. Crenides and Passing Through were spared the heart-breaking task of chasing Gloaming in the Jackson Stakes, only four going to the post. Of course, Gloaming was odds on, and his backers just about got "beer money" out of the race. As they Jined up Borealis was on the rails, with Killowen, Croesus and Gloaming in that order. The quartette gave no trouble at the barrier, but Gloaming leapt off first, and at the end of a furlong was on the fence, half a length in front of Croesus, with Killowen a length away, and Borealis last. The procession was unchanged throughout, Gloaming (hard held) winning by a good length from Croesus, with Killowen two lengths away, just in front of Borealis. The six furlongs took lmin 1H l-Ssec, but on such a fast track the winner could have done much better if he had been pushed. Gloaming came in for a cheer on returning to scale, and the crowd did not forget old Croesus, who put up a game fight. The eleven horses carded for the Wanganui Cup were saddled up, and when the tote closed the sum of £7707 had been registered. Client, Dusky Eve and Bonnie Maid each carried well over a thousand, and Menelaus and Depredation a little under the four-figure mark. Rewi l'oto and Henry Clay were paying big prices, while Alteration and Bingham were the outsiders. Rewi Poto dwelt slightly at the start, but the rest moved off in line. Form Up, Depredation and Menelaus were prominent along the back, but Form Up and Rewi l'oto were abreast passing the stand, with Depredation, Bonnie Maid, Bingham and Dusky Eve following, and Client last. Four furlongs from home the solid pace set began to tell on the loaders, and Depredation assumed command. At the three furlongs post Husky Eve and Menelaus made their runs, and the former was alongside Depredation as they entered the straight. In the run home Dusky Eve came away and won very easily by two lengths from Depredation, with Menelaus a similar distance away third, and Client, Bonnie Maid, Bingham and Henry Clay next Dusky Eve had a lot in hand at the finish, and should go on winning. The eleven carded for the Juvenile Handicap went to the post, Vmytha(Gray) being a better favorite t!>ari Passing Through and Bonnie Briar. The Absurd colt Golden Bubble led from AmyOiks to the turn, but Bonnie Briar and Nrglige fought out the finish, the former -coring easily. Amythas had every chance,'but finished badly. • Compel and Khartoum were withdrawn from Hie YVir'toa Hack race, leaving thirteen runners. A good betting race saw Cooing finish up a slightly better favorite than Sacramento and Arrowfield Willy's Knight, Bold Boy and Papanui were early prominent, but befpre reaching the bend Cooing hud closed on the leaders, and, stalling off a strong challenge by Arrowfield, ran in a comfortable winner.
Chortle was the only scratching in the laying Handicap, and Silver Link (B Vo;v,s), Waimaloa (Dec-lev) and 80, , cep (Gray) all carried big nionev. Inah led down 1 he back from Silver Link and Bonnie Briar, but the favorite was in irorit at the distance, and won all out by I'M! a length from Bonnie Briar, with lio-l-eep, i'emioii, Simonides, Chimera and Jnali next. The journey occupied lmin 12 ti-osec—a rattling good '"go."
