Mr W. E. Lcighton has received advice that his son, Gunner N R. Leighton, is arriving at New Zealand on the Zealandie on or about February 2S. Mr Haggett, late of Mr Newton King's Stratford staff, has been appointed secretary of the Hawera Hospital Board. Mr Geo Dawson, who is relinquishing the position of clerk to the Waimate West County Council, was on Thursday voted £SO as a mark of appreciation.of his services. Mr M. Fraser, chairman of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, accompanied by Mr V- J. Hill, a member of the Board, left for Wellington by the mail train yesterday morning, on business connected with the hospital. Mr Justice Stringer, president, an,! Messrs Wm. Scott and J. A. McCullough employers' and workers' representatives respectively of the Arbitration Court, which sat in New Plymouth yesterday, leave for Wellington by the mail train this morning Mr J. Prestney has received advice that Private A. Prestney is returning to New Zealand with returning draft No. 219, on IT.MT. Port Melbourne, which is due to arrive at Auckland on or about March 5, 1910. Mr R. S. Galbraith, of the Wellington district office of the Department of Lands, has been appointed Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown T.ands for Westland. Mr Galbraith is succeeded by Mr W. T. Morpeth, at present: in charge of the Land Transfer Branch of the Department, Wellington —Press Assoc. At the Civil Engineers' Conference th-j election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, ' Mi' Ferguson (Wellington)) members of the council, Messrs S. A Mair (Hnntcrville), 0 T. Murray (Auckland), and K. IT. Sharp (Stratford). Mr F. Basham wai •Added to tin list of vice-presidents. The following returned men are expected to arrive at New Plymouth by the mail train to-night: Stevens, Smith, Ward, Whittaker, Martin, Moorcock, Oliver, Pcarce, Pentelow, Gray, Humphries, Johnston, Langley, Martin, f)es Gorges, Donaldson, Hockey, Cameron, Chartres, Cook, Coombc, Cran, Willing, .Shirley. Private A. Smith, of New Plymouth, who was taken prisoner bv the Germans in one of the last "stunts" on the western front, returns to New Plymouth this even'ng. Before joining the forces Private Smith was a prominent member of the Salvation Army band, and his comrades intend assembling at the railway station to extend to him a hearty welcome home. | Advice was received in Auckland this week of the death of Mr Harold Desmond Gold-Smith, from pneumonia, at Edinburgh, a few days ago. Mr GoldSmith left New Zealand ,on October 2nd last, being attached to the artillery branch of the 43rd Reinforcement as gunner. Prior to his departure to camp he was for many years on the staff of the New Zealand Insurance I Company. He was born at Christchurch thirty years ago, and was a son of Mr V. Gold-Smith, formerly Commissioner of Crown Lands at Auckland.
