ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION. YOUTHFUL RUSSIAN'S CRIME. 1 London, Feb. 18. | jvi. \Jlemenceau was leaving his homo in Paris this morning en route to tlie Conference, with Mr. Balfour and Colonel House, and was entering an automobile when a young man, who was waiting outside, tired several shots with a revolver Only one struck M. Clemenceau in the shoulder, and the wound is not dangerous, though there is some anxiety as to the effect of the shock owing to M. Clemenceau's age (M. Clemenceau is 78 years of age), Six bullets struck the motor, smashing the glass M. Clemenceau walked into his home after the shooting. His assailant, Emile Cottin, aged 18, is believed to be a Russian. He was arrested after getting a severe thrashing at the hands of the crowd. To-day's sitting of the conference has been cancelled—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. In the House of Commons Mr. Bonar Law stated that M. Clemenceau was in bed, but expected to be up in a few days. A Paris message states that M. Clemenceau grappled with his assailant after he had been shot.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. I WOUND SERIOUS. ASSAILANT A DANGEROUS ANARCHIST. Feb. 21, 12.30 a.m. Paris, Feb. CO. M. Clemenceau's wound seems to be more serious than was at first thought. The bullet is near the spine. The assailant Cottin is known as a dangerous anarchist. He confesses he alone wsa responsible. He stated: "I am a French individual anarchist, and consider Clemenceau an enemy to the working class and humanity, and preparing another war." SYMPATHY FROM KING GEORGE. Received Feb. 20, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 19. The King telegraphed to M. Clemenceau: "I gm shocked to hear of the dastardly attack on you, and earnestly trust your injuries are not serious, and that, thanks to your splendid energy and courage, you will soon be restored to health to continue your great and valued efforts for France and her allies." —Reuter.
