WANGANUI RACING CARNIVAL. (Notes by "Moturoa.") 'Wanganui, Last Night. There is an immense crowd here fur \ the racing and trotting carnival, and accommodation is overtaxed, tents and shakedowns being set up tor late coiiK-rs. A slight drizzle lias fallen all day, but the weather promises to improve this evening The course, which was hard, should be improved b,y to-day's rain This morning's gallops were very interesting, and Client, Alctielous, Dusky Kve and Depredation went the best of the corps of candidates. Gloaming, wide out ran live furlongs brilliantly in'l.l. Silver Link took three seconds longer. Menelaus easily beat Master Morton over ten furlongs in 2.17. Bonnie Maid and Dusky Eve finished together at the end of six furlongs in 117- Depredation went a mile and a quarter, Client a mile and a distance, both moving well. Form lip finished strongly at the end of a mile in 1.46. Amythus and Acre did five furlongs in 1.4, finishing together. Amythus has made many friends by his good showing. Form Up and Kipling arc likely to start; favorites in the Stewards' Handicap, Jutland and Rebekah in the Petre Hanricap, Amythus and Bonnie Briar in the Juvenile, and Perfect Day and Arrowlie!d in the Wiritna Handicap. Crenides has been scratched for the ■Jackson Stakes and Battle Song for all engagements • Dusky Kve is now a hot favorite for the Cup, but Client and Menelaus loot very fit and the better of the top weights and will take some beating. The following are likely starters and riders: Client, C. Price; Menelaus, A. Peed; Rewi Poto. F. Johnson; Bonnie Maid, H. Gray; Depredation, R. Reed: Dusky Eve, L. Morris; Henry Clay, R. P.flgby; Master Moutoa, P. Rayner. If Form Up goes to the post M McCarten | will probably ride him. Waimatoa and Silver Link are much discussed candidates in the Flying HandicapJACKSON STAKES WEIGHTS. The following weights will be carried in the Jackson Stakes: Croesus 811, Killowen 87. Gloaming 8.4, Borealis 8.4, Passin Thro' 6.11. TURF TOPICS. (By Moturoa). A carnival of racing opens at Wanganui to-day, find judging by the large number of visitors already in the town a great gathering is assured. The Wanganui J.C. sets the ball rolling on Thursday, when the Wanganui Cup, Jackson Stakes, and Flying Handicap will be the principal events. Tlie Wanganui Trotting Club races on the same course on Friday, the Wanganui Trotting Cup being the star item. Saturday will see the gallopers in action again, the Wanganui Guineas and Wanganui Stakes providing most excitement. Tho trotters will "finish up the game," as Mel B. Spurr used to say, on Monday. The acceptances received on Monday evening for the first day's events at Wanganui arc up to expectations, but most of our good horses In".-.' had rather more than a fair share .- ■ i-ing during the past few months, ;pm! ..you big stakes do not always succeed in attracting them- The gathering is robbed of much of its interest by the scratching of Desert Gold, and Surveyor is another that is not. expected at the meeting. Gloaming is there, and alfio good horses like Crenide*. Rewi Poto. Depredation, Dusky Eve, Croesus. Chortle. Waimntivt and Form Un. Killowen. Mcneliius. Silver Link, Client. Acre and a host or o+hers are due on Wednesday. Ten horses bave been paid up for in tl'e Cup. Including Client. Menelaus. Rowi "nln, Bonnie Maid. Depredation. Duil.v Rvo. etc., while the m|ost defections are Karn, Nobleman. Ma=rrfl "id All Over Form Up is engaged in the Stewards' Handicap, run the same dav. The writer has had several opportunities of seeing morning track work, and of those seen out on Mondav and Tuesday nothing has galloped better than Depredation. Dusky Eve was a trifle flora after racing at Hawera. but went well to-day (Tuesday), and is now one of the prime favorites for the race. Rewi Poto is looking well hut one mile and a haM on the second day may be

more his distar.ee. Menelaus come:" as a strong tip from Wellington, and is repolled to be in good racing trim. Fourteen remain in the Flying Handicaj., including the much-fancied Waimatoa, Silver Link, Acre and Pennon. Croesus is the principal absentee, and will start in the Jack-son Stakes. Waimatoe won so easily at Hawera with 9.1 that 8.11 (including 71b penalty) should not stop him at Wanganui. The tracks are too hard there to allow of Pennon doin? all that his trainer could wish, but should rain fall before Thursday his chance would be second to none. Silver Link, Inah and Tirana have followers, but it looks as if Waimatoa will he a hot order on the day. , ] Fair fields will cor.test the minor ' events Kipling and Form Up are much discussed candidates in the Stewards' Handicap, and Jutland, Wonder and Endure in the Petre Hack Handicap. The Westmere Hurdles looks like producing I a good race between Loyal Arch and | Arlington, and Amythas, Bonnie Briar and Passing Through are nicely olaced I in the Juvenile Handicap. The Wiritoa Hack Handicap looks very open, hut the public mav go clueflv for ArrowiWd and ! Perfect Day. ' | Croesus galloped nicely on Tuesday, and appoar-i to be nine the worse for hi? mishap in the Egmont Stakes. On Tuesday the principal work was done on the course proper, outside two , trestles. Deoredation galloped a mile in ■ 1.45, finishing strongly. It was a. splendid trial. Dusky Eve covered a mile and a quarter in 2.16. creditable time. Mason's horses were restricted to light tasks. Zela covered a mile in 1.47, running wide out all the way. The following arc likely runners in the; Jackson Stakes:—Gloaming, Croesus. Killowen and Crc-nides Tn our advertising columns will he found the programme for the Opunake Racing Club's annual meeting, to be held on March 17. Two open races, a track hurdle event, and five hack flat races are carded, and good stakes are of- \ fered all round. Mr H. Ooyle will do the handicapping, and Mr. A If/ Mooro will take his usual place at the barrier. Nominations for all' events dlose on Monday next at 5 p.m. Last year Client won the Wanganui Cnn with 85 in the saddle, and the second day took off the Wanganui Stakes (IV, miles! with 3.3. He afterwards won the Hawke's Bay Cup (\% miles) with 9.3, so that he seems to have earned every ounce of his 9st in this week's cup race. Reports from Fordell sav that he is very well. Gray's luck was right out at the El'mont meeting. He rode six seconds and two thirds, but failed to win a race outright. Most of ' ; fhe head?" went for Rolmr on Friday, and some of them stained the atmosphere whe n Marqueteui got up on the post and beat the mare Some people reckoned that Con Reed went to sleep once he bit the front. Te Toa has shown some pace in hia ! recent essays, and should reward Percy Johnson with a win shortly—possibly at l Opunake. There is a yam going the rounds of ] the papers that White Ranger changed hands for 1-2 guineas on the day between ' the Hawera races. This is quite wrong. He was passed in at 55 guineas the day before he won the Farmers' Plate. There is no doubt about Metallum's pace, but she is a tigress at the barrier. Starter C- O'Connor had no mercy on her on the second day at Hawera, biit lie held the field up for a long while for" Vance earlier in the day. Excellent management charaotnriscd the Egmont meeting, and in Secretary Stratton and Caretaker Morse the Club has two first-class servants. Mr. Strutton was ablv assisted hv Mr. F. Spriggens, of Wanganui 'the press were bolted after splendidly, nil 'particulars is to totalisaW figures, inquiries, etc., being promptly supplied, for which the hard-working pen pushers have much to thank tli« Club's con-tfo,,, r.ffioiak After the hrilliant performances registered by Gloaming this season, it is interesting to learn that B. Deelev, who has ridden him in most of his engagements does not consider him such a good horse as Biplane.
