Association opened in dull weather. The present exhibition is the first autumn ahow, hitherto the Society favoring the spring as the most suitable period- The same conditions would have prevailed this year under 'ordinary circumstances, but the influenza epidemic and the Government embargo necessitated either postponement or abandonment of the fixture, and the autumn show was the result. A district advantage in connection with the present show is that it brings it into line with the neighbouring Association's gatherings, and as a result those owning stock and coming from a distance are able to enter their stock in the competition ring with rf minimum of trouble and expense. In moving round the various pens it was very apparent that the exceptionally bad winter and wet spring had had its effect on stock, particularly the dairying classes. This opinion was emphasised on interviewing the various judge-5, who stated that the spring was more desirable for dairying stock. Howover, the cattle penned and in the competition ring were a credit to their owners, and the fat stock, principally Shorthorns, were excellent indications of what Taranaki can produce. Entries generally were hardly up to previous vcars, but the exhibits are, considering the circumstances of the last few months, quite up to the average standard of quality Competition was mainly in the hands of Taranaki settlers, and several young exhibitors scored good wins. Ranford Bros., of Stratford, were particularly fortunate in their exhibits. ?eorin<r 5 first, 1 championship and 3 seconds in fl entries. In Aryshires, Olson Bros.' bad a numerous entry, and annexed the balance of the prize money. Pigs were not numerous, being confined mninly to Berkshires- Tn this connection. E. IT. Linnell, Midhirst, was successful in winning the championship for bear, the same animal winning last year The Midhirst exhibitor had good quality to beat. Mr Rutledge. Midhirst, »also specialises in pigs and his entries snowed good quality, his pen of baconers eliciting admiration from spectators. Horse entries were good, the judge remarking that the draught classes, excepting in young stuff, being quite up to previous vears. A new exhibitor, Mr J. S. Johnstone, Normanby, entered tho lists, and with A. S. Kenjrick formed the bulk of the entries. The various horse events added a variety to the show that was appreciated by all- The jumping was very clean and horsemanship of the best. The grounds were in j excellent order; there was an abundance of feed for stock, and the judges found the ring continually filled so there was no delay in judging. As was the case last year the catering was in the capable bands of the ladies' committee, headed by Mrs Boon, and the qualify and quantity of the excellent luncheon exceeded expectations. The attendance of the public appeared to be up to last year's, and they found plenty to enthuse over. Everything went off expeditiously, and lyThe fine ferro-concrete kiosk designed by Mr W. Lopdell was" in use for the first time, and proved a valuable acquisition to the show grounds, whilst permitting the ladies engaged to display their wares, confectionery and icecreams with the minimum' of trouble. The sheep and cattle euessjng pens, also designed by Mr Lopdell, arc substantial and permanent in character, and, run by energetic stewards, should prove a valuable source of revenue. The gate takings were £9 less than the first day of kst year, but it is anticipated this «ill be more than balanced by the increased attendance expected to-day. secretary (Mr A. D. Stanley) and his assistant '(Mr S. Ward) are again to be congratulated on the completeness of the arrangements in their department, where everything went without a hitch. The press are also indebted to the press steward, Mr R Masters, who saw that the results came to hand promptly, thus enabling the reporters to handle the prize lists in something like comfort. PEOPLE'S DAY TO-DAY. Given fine weather there is certain to be a large attendance to-day, which is People's Day, for there is much to inf»iTst both townsmen and farmers- The ji'dging of the ring events will take place during the morning, and the Grand Parade 6f prize winning stock will take place at 1.30 p.m. and thereafter there Will be numerous interesting competitions... The Stratford Brass Band will contribute a programme of music. The train-arrangements foi J North and South will enable residents of Taranaki to visit the show during the afternoon. The train usually leaving yew Plymouth at ll.EQa.m. will be accelerated to-dav arid will leave at 10.50 a.m arriving in Stratford at 1 p.m; The following is the prize list:

DOGS
Though not so strong numerically as usual, many of the exhibits in the dog section of the Stratford Show are of exceptionally good quality, notably a team of English setters shown in fine bloom by Mr. A. H. Prober!, of Dannevirke. :md the bulldog "Baron Swasher" benched by Mr. J. D. .1). Rivett, of Stratford, who won the ladies' bracelet with the same entry. There were a number of very fair greyhounds; collies were weak, whilst the opinion was expressed that in connection witli the workingcollie classes the dogs should be called upon to work, points being awarded for work and for type. Cocker spaniels included some very nice little dogs, whilst fox terriers, though not numerous, were good in quality. There was no competition in the Airedale terriers, lint J. W. McMillan's Midland Renown is fit for exhibition in any show, and gave Revett's bulldog a good run for the bracelet. Pugs and Pomeranians were small sections, but the winners were of good type. There was keen competition in the variety classes, Probert winning the classes for best dog or bitch. The same exhibitor alsb won the sporting brace and team class, whilst, as alreadi stated, Revett won the ladies' bracelet. The harriers shown by the North Tarnnaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunts added to the interest of the dog section. Mr. A. T. Moore, of New Plymouth, was judge, and got through his' work with nromptitude, giving also general satisfaction. GREYHOUNDS. Dogs, puppy under 12 months: J. Fitzgerald's Seaplane 1.
