Hawera, at tne evening service on Sunday, a tablet Was unveiled in memory of the late Sergt A. J. 'Salmon, a Hawera bdy, who <nlisted at Auckland, and after seeing a lot of active service was killed in France. The vicar (Rev. C. H. Grant Cowen) unveiled the tablet at the con> elusion of a short service of dedication: "To the glory of God and in memory ot Sergt- Alfred J. Salmon, Cth Hauraki Regiment, killed at the battle of Messines, 7th June, 1917; aged 28 years.' 1 At the foot of the tablet are added the words, "Simply to Thy Cross I cling." Sergt. Salmon was the son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Salmon, formerly old residents of Hawera.—Star. Mr R. H. Nolan, of Hawera, in a letter to Mr E. Dixon, dated December 16, gives confirmation of the news that Private Were, son of Mr James Were, formerly of Hawera, had turned up all right. In November last Private Were was reported missing, and enquiry at the Records Office in London failed to elicit anything. But on Saturday night, Mr Nolan writes, Were arrived at the Soldiers' Club in a batch of war prisoners from Germany. He was to get a couple of months' leave, and would then be sent to New Zealand. He had not had so bad a time as some of the prisoners had, notably Surgenor, formerly of Otakeho. Mr Nolan added that he had hopes that the Club could be closed about July next. He also encloses a note from the High Commissioner explaining that war trophies would be allocated at Wellington, but a request for four guns for Hawera had been passed on to General Russell.
