NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the New Plymouth ■ High Schools Board was held last night, when there were present: Messrs R. W. D. Robertson (chairman), .)[ Trimble, J. S. Fox, L. C. Sladden, F. W. Atkinson, E. I'. Webster, 8. G. Smith, M P., and Dr. Fookes. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. Morton and Hutchen. THE BOYS' SCHOOL. Mr. W. H. Moyes, principal of the boys' school, submitted the necessary requirements in regard tp furnishing at the New Plymouth School, equipping the gymnasium and other matters. "These were referred to a committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs. Sladden, Webster, Smith and l)r. Fookes. The chairman's action in regard to ordering tables, etc., for two of the class rooms Was approved. The appointment of a caretaker for the school was left in the hands of the chairman and principal. Mr. Moyes stated that there were 240 boys in the upper school, and 80 in the preparatory school. Two additional teachers Were required to staff the school, as there were now 10 forms and only 8 teachers. The question of filling the vacancies was referred to Mr. Moyes. Other matters relative to the rearrangement of the classical and commercial classes as suggested by Mr. Moyes were agreed to. Mr. Moyes stated that it would be necessary to appoint a physical instructor.—Referred to the town committee, with power to act. The purchase of additional pianos was left in the hands of the country members. Mr. Moyes reported that there were now 143 boarders, and one or two more were expected. Slfeeping accommodation for twenty boys was provided in the stewards' stand at the racecourse, where the boys were in the charge of two masters. THE GIRLS' SCHOOL. Miss Ban- reported that the girls' school re-opened on February 5 with ICI pupils, of whom 50 were boarders. She asked that an additional piano ana a typewriter should be provided.—Request granted. GENERAL. A telegram was received from the Education Department notifying that a grant of £3OO on a £ for £ basis had been approved for the provision of apparatus for the physics and chemistry laboratory. The chairman stated that the completed fittings would cost £695. It was stated that the original estimate was £566. It was resolved to ask the Government to grant an increased subsidy, owing to the price having advanced during the delay in making a grant. Tlie Taranaki War Relief Association notified that boarding scholarships had. been awarded to E. Pope and H. E. Pitt. These were accepted. A vote of thanks was accorded the management of the Taranaki Amusements for their generous donation of £2 towards the rent of the Empire Theatre on the occasion of the prize-giving ceremony. Mr. S. G. Smith gave notice to move at next meeting that various standing committees—agricultural, house and supplies, and finance—be set up.
