The meeting of the btraxford County Council ou Saturday, a deputation comprising Mesons W- Richards and Aiogers waited on the Council and asked that a piece of ground at the comer oi the Upunake-Cardiff roads should be handed over to them in order to erect a memorial to fallen soldiers of the district. Cr. Anderson favored the idea, provided there was sufficient land available alter allowing for the two roads to be widened Cr. Hancock said Cardiff had done its bit in the war and should lie assisted by the Council as much as possible. The pluee was an eye sore at present and the memorial erected wound be a credit to the district. He considered the place an ideal one for the purpose. The chairman regretted rather that the scheme was being gone on with. He had hoped that something on a grand scale would have been attempted by the Straford Couny and Borough If each little district started on its own. be was afraid that places where one or two lads bad fallen would be neglected. 'Mr G. D. Gow, president of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce, notified the Stratford County Council, that the Chamber had been discussing the question of a hydro-electric scheme for tliu supply of electric energy for the district, Mid iiad resolved to call a meeting to consider tho establishment of a such ?. scheme The matter hnd been given a good deal of nubUcity of late and was an important one to all who used power. The, scheme proposed would be administered by a Power Board under the new Act and could, with advantage to all, include tVe greater part of the Stratford district. An invitation was extended to the chairman and Councillors to be present and cooperate in the important undertaking. The chairman stated that a committee had been set up bv a conference of local bodies but oinee the influenza it had fallen flat. According to Mr Parry, Taranaki would not bo supplied cheaply enough, but he thought that other people recognised that there were one or two suitable streams. Cr. Cr? 0' Neill and Anderson were appointed to represent the Council. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held on Friday before Mr A. Orooke, S.M. J. O'Neill was fined 10s and cost 3 for driving his car across a level railway grossing when an engine was within half a mile. Jas. Yandle, who pleaded guilty to a'charge of failing to register the birth of a child within the prescribed time, was convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs. Tho9. McDoncll applied for a reduction of a maintenance order (made by consent) of 5s a week each, in respect of six children at the Industrial school to 3s M.—Refused. Reserved decision was given In the cases in which the police proceeded against E. Crabtree on a charge of being drunk whilst in charge of a motor car. He was fined £3 and costs £4 10s. A further charge of driving at a speed dungerous to the public was dismissedMr 3 Enright, licensee of the Midhirst Hotel, and her daughter Catherine Enright, pleaded guilty to charges of permitting shouting. A fine of £1 in each case was inflicted with costs £4 Is. Louis Donumck Fisher, Midhirst, claimed £95 Is from Chas. Young, Katapiko, for damages alleged to have 'been caused by defendant having negligently driven a motor car over plaintiff on Aug, 22nd, totally incapacitating him for ten weeks. Evidence was given by plaintiff. Br. Steven, R, Masters and Campbell Jackson, when the further hearing was adjourned till next court day. On the information of the borough inspector (Mr Kowson) J. Keegan was fined 10s and costs 7s for driving a horse and gig in Broadway without lights. ( GENERAL. Mr. W. J. Lopdell, who has been engineer to the Stratford County Council for the past 4J years, is leaving for Auckland on Tuesday night to take up his position as engineer to the Manukau County Council. Prior to the conclusion of Saturday's meeting, members of the Stratford County Council spoke in highly complimentary terms of his services. Mr. Lopdell, expressing appreciation of the manner in which they were parting after 414 yews' association, said he had gained a good deal of information from old councillors, which he had stored up anfl it would stand to him. Regarding any difference they may have had, he would leave the room bearing no illfeeling. In concluding, he hoped they might improve the position of their overdraft, so that their roads might also be improved. Lieut, R. Woods, who since his return from the front has been undergoing hospital treatment in Wellington, is at present on a visit to Stratford, He will shortly return to Wellington for reexamination. Stratford dog fanciers were very successful at the Danncvirke show. Mr. W. Pellet gained six first awards in wirehaired terriers, and a second and a third for smooth-coated fox terriers. "Noxious weeds, particularly ragwort and blackberry, are playing havoc in the county," remarked Cr. Were at the Stratford County Council meeting on Saturday. Ragwort is to be seen right opposite the Model Dairy Farm. Cr. Mackay said that some parts of the county were a picture with noxious weeds. It was resolved to draw the attention of the iioA'ious weeds inspector to the spread 01 noxious weeds, partieu- < larly blackberry and ragworth, in the county. Mr John McDermott, of Auckland, was appointed bridge toreman to the Swatlord County Council out of sis applicants Failing his acceptance the position will be offered to Mr N. &■ Jones, of Mt. Eden. Cr. Baskin, at Saturday's meeting of the Stratford County Council, referred to some matter that he alleged had taken j.laoo two years ago, and in the course of argument appealed to Cr. Were for verification. Cr. Were replied: "I take no notice of what you say—you talk so much humbug." When discussing the purchase of a concrete mixture at the meeting of the Stratford County Council 011 Saturday, Cr Mackay pointed out that a new roller was required and also a tar sprayer. They also needed a garage to house their machinery, etc., and he considered that the Council would have to take steps to secure a machinery loan.
