WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Feb. 13. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night it was decided to defer the matter of taking the necessary steps to procure the bridge loan of £ISOO, which was passed in the Washing-up Bill at the end of last session of Parliament, to be dealt with by the new Council winch will be elected in April. If the bridge is in the bad way the engineer says it is, it seems rather a pity to run the risk of losing the loan by "delay in accepting it, but probably it will still be obtainable in three or four months time.

Mr iS. D. George was elected, by resolution, to fill the vacancy on the Council, which had been open for four months. The usual complaints were made or the number of stock straying on the streets, and it seems quite impossible to stop this by impounding the stock. The only way that has been at all successful is by sucing the owners of stock found trespassing. Councillors called attention to the need of replacing street lights in various parts of the borough, which had not been alight for a considerable time and a resolution was passed "That all street lights be attended to at once/' The Mayor reported that at the "last mceling of the Patriotic Society a suggestion had been made that the Council at this meeting should go into the matter of appointing a committee consisting of all members of the Local Bodies and all the different societies in the town with a view to making arrangements for celebrating peace on a large scale It was left in the Mayor's hands to call a meeting and to notify all pe?son* interested. Messrs Caustad Marlow and Co. were granted permission to store 1200 raises of benzine. The most they have been allowed to store before was 750 cases. I am informed tlat the firm is getting a shipment of 2000 cases in, so that they will have to find a place somewhere in the eountry to store 800 casesThe annual meeting of the Domain Board was held last night to pass tn» annual report and balance sheet. This was the only business before the meet* ing.
