McAllister (chairman), liD. Sole, R. MoK. Morisoa, E. W. Hancock, J. O'Neill, E. Walter and 0. R. Finnerty were present at the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday. A request for £4O was received from the Wluuigamomona Medical Association in connection with the epidemic ex- , peases. The letter also expressed sur- ] prise that the Government should pay • out an account of over £4O, holding that ; those of lesser amounts should be ,paid < first as the poor man should have pre- { ference. The desirability of enlarging and improving the hospital was raised by Mr Hancock, who stated that although the question had previously been before the Board the matter now appeared to be dropped. i The chairman said they had not lost sight of the necessity, hut the Board < was waiting to hear from tho Sovern- i mont on the question of the money being i forthcoming before going to the expense of preparing the detailed plans ' asked for by the Department The \ Board had already spent £7O to this ' direction. ' ' Mr Sole agreed that somaiiing Bhou'd ' be done, and moved that the Minister ' in charge of Hospitals be written to ro reeard to the proposed new building, and that when the money is definitely qi* , rared detailed plans would be prepared, , In the meantime it was unfair that the Board should spend a further sum on , plans.—The motion was carried. s The chairman had a sympathetic , Board when he brought forward his mo- , tion: "That the salaries of the staff | be raised," and suggested the payments be for the matron £l3O, staff sister £ £!»5, qualified nurse £73 raising to £M t after one year. He stated that neigh- -\ bouring hospitals "paid £BO to the last -\ mentioned nurse, and with the salary < raised to £BO and the other figures as outlined by the chairman the motion j was carried. s

There was a short session of th& Tarnnaki War Delief Association this mSm ing. Mr'Bellrmger, New Plymouth delegate, sajd there was need of tho erection of a Convalescent Home for Taranaki. Continuing he stated there would he a number of men returning who would suffer from recurring illness Permanent provision should be made before the funds of the Association wer* absorbed. He suggested it might t>» possible to allocate something from the Association's funds for thjs purpose, and gave notice that the question be cont iuered at the next meeting. Although the weather was fine there were few workmen to seen on the roads to-day. Evidently the desire to see the Gloaming-Desert Gold contest proved too enticing to. resist. Mr Sullivan, engineer, hopes to have the tar-sealing commenced by Monday at the latest and believes that the whole of Broadway will be completed before the expiration of the present Council (April). Everything depends upon the weather. At Midhirst tho County Council's crusher is getting through fine work, whilst the tar-sealing of roads therp makes it a pleasure to traverse the highway now, and the old saying that half of the dust of Stratford travels from Midhirst will he incorrect m the future
