RESIDENT DOCTOR AT OPUNAKE.

A CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. At tin- meeting of the Egniont County Council yesterday letters were received from the Parihaka Road Board and the Opunake Town Board, agreeing to the council's suggestion to hold a conference to discuss ways and means for securing a permanent resident doctor for the district. The Town Board stated that it had been persistently endeavoring to get a permanent doctor for the district, but with the added weight of the county they might 09 successful. Dr. Valintine, in noting that a conference of local bodies was to be held for the purpose of filling the vacancy, suggested thta the committee should wait on Mrs. Barron, with a view to buying out Dr. Barron's interest in the matter. Mr. Wilkinson, member for the district, had interested himself on several occasions, and done everything possible to procure the services of a fully qualified medical officer for the district.

Cr. Harvey said that whatever action was taKen by tlie committee must be subject to confirmation by the whole council. He was opposed to spending rates in purchasing doctors' practices. In fact, ho considered the council had no right to spend rates in this way. Any money required for the purpose should be found by public subscription. Cr. Campbell was also opposed to spending rates in this way. In the course of discussion it was pointed out that there-was no authority to utilise rates to buy out a practice, but they could subsidise a doctor. Crs. Sinplair, O'Brien, Campbell, Holder and Harvey were appointed to represent the council at the conference, any scheme formulated to be referred back to the council. Cr. Cornish saw no need to refer the matler back to the council. If the practice waa to be bought, it would, have to be dons with public subscription. No financial help would be required from the 1 council, as once Dr. Barron was bought out plenty of doctors would be available. Cr. Harvey considered that the public | who required the doctor should make the move.

The conference was fixed for Monday morning.
