Health, the proper channel through : which to administer being the local bodies in whose area the different cases '. are at present situate.—Receired. WIREMU ROAD. The committee set up—Crs. M. O'Brien (chairman), T. Harvey, A. W. Holder, T. A. Eowo, and the county engineer—reported that a meeting ha.l been held, when a letter was received from the resident engineer in connection with the work that ho intended having done on the Wiremu Road (Newall— Ngariki). It was resolved that the resident engineer's recommendations be agreed to, and that the method of spending the money be left to the county engineer, with a recommendation that tenders be obtained for the making of the necessary concrete pipes; that the engineer ask the resident engineer to inspect Wiremu Road between the Ngariki Road and Arnwhata Road, with a view to recommending a grant for repairs to that portion; that the resident engineer be asked to endeavor to expend the remainder of the £IOOO grant allocated to the Wiremu Road between the Arawhata and Ihaia Roads as early as possible, and that he be asked to reconsider his recommendations with reference to the suspension bridge over the Waiau river on the Wiremu Road, and to endeavor to obtain his department's consent to the provision of a suspension bridge of sufficient capacity and strength to carry saddle horse traffic at an early date.—Approved. Cr. O'Brien moved that the council subsidise the Government grant of £IOO on the Wiremu Road from Ngariki Road to Newall Road £ for £. A new valuation would be made shortly, and the rates would get the benefit of the reading. Cr. Green said the council must be careful in it 3 expenditure. Where was the money to come from? Without taking the contracts into account they had expended £OOOO of next year's rates. Cr. O'Brien said that for the past twenty years they ha<l taken rates from the settlers and given them nothing. That was not local government. The resolution was carried. Cr. O'Brien said that money would have to be found by the council, as the settlers themselves were subscribing money for work on other parts of the road. The road was a most important one to the county and the council must be prepared to subsidise it, Cr. Campbell's name was added to the committee. GENERAL. He understood that the Parihaka Road Board was willing that £2O should be paid. Taurua, therefore, asked that the drain be filled in nr.l the water taken along the Egmont Road—presumably he meant main road. —It was resolved to vote £2O as requested. The Advances Department notified that the council's application for a loan of £145 (being 10 per cent, additional) for forming and metalling Upper Auroa Road had been approved. The necessary special order was passed. The engineer was authorised to supply information required by the Public Works Department relative to the cosf of placing metal on roads.
