TIIE EGMONT MEETING, The Egmout Racing Club's summer meeting, wJiich takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, gives promise oi excellent sport, iuiU. a line ineeling in assured, it is to be hoped that Desert Gold and Gloaming will light their battle over again in either the" Egmout Stakes or the Hawera Cup, but at time of writing nothing definite is known of their owners' intentions. Good fields are carded far the iirst day's events, xne Egmont Cup attracting eleven horses, including Kiwi Poto, Ladoguer and Dusky Eve, while the Flying Hack will see 80-Peep, Inah, Movement, and five other fair horses in action. Six hold their ground in the Ohawe Hurdles, in- ' eluding Paraoa, Golden Grafton ana Otter, and the issue looks very open, big fields will contest the minor events, and winners appear to be well concealed. < The Hawera course is in splendid order, and all arrangements are complete for the convenience of patrons and to ensure a successful meeting. TURF TOPIC& (By "Moturoa." Entries for the Dannevirke Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Wednesday. The detailed programme appears in another column, and the good stakes offered should prove attractive to Tarauaki horse owners and trainers. The merits of Desert Gold and Gloaming are still being fiercely discussed, and even after witnessing their never-to-be-forgotten battle in the Taranaki Stakes the public appear to be evenly .divided on the question of individual superiority. There is no doubt that Gray outgeneralled Deeley on Thursday last, and that, with an even break there can be little or nothing between the pair over six furlongs. With bettfp luck in running the three-year-old might have beaten his older rival here, but the mare did not look anything ready, and she should strip very much better next time the pair meet. §ome good judges coneider that when Gloaming got clear in the straight he had every chance of winning, but his spirit was short-lived, and over the last fifty yards Desert Gold was going the of the pair. One cannot but admire Gray's horsemanship, and a fair rendering of Thursday's race would be:— Hector Grav •■-.. 1 Desert Gold .-„ 2 Gloaming r 3 Won easily by three lengths: a head between second and thirdInah is now at her best, and she will be very unlucky if she fails to get her number hoisted at Hawera Since Mr H, W. Brown acquired Form Up, cheaply by the way, he has had a ■jond return for his money. The big bay is staying better now, and later on should shine over timber. With Loyal Arch and Form Up Mr Brown has won hi? raonev, both in Stakes and betting, lately. Rewi Poto and Lndogner will carry big money at Hav. ■]■;!., but Dusky Eve may keep them moving in the distance races. The expressions on the faces of some of the big punter? when Desert Gold ran in a winner last week were a sight for the ffods. And the language! Gee! One well-known Palmerstnn plunger—a ir-t eigner at that—let off such a. roar ('* t torched the atmosphere for yards around. He has a plavful habit of calling himself nasty names whenever ha drops anvthina like £l5O over one of his can'f.-lose favorites. Philomela is in great nick just now, but Mr Oovle has set her a severe task at Hawera to-morrow. Everybody was pleased to see BertChanev get n win on Thursday, and tlie price Speedwel Mae paid was very acceptable. Tf Karo starts in the Wanganui Can 7 5 should not trouble her much. Wnn"inui snorts ere tnlkimj about Client doing the fcvMc onoe more. Desert Cold and Clnaminft. who are to meet in the Esmnnt Stakes on Wednesday, arrived in Hawera yesterday afterI noon. Roth are looking in the best of condition.
