PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
OBJECTION TO COUNCIL'S EXPENDITURE. By Telegraph.—Presa Association. Chriatehurch, Last Night At a meeting of the City Council tonight a committee recommended the Council to spend up to £IOOO on the erection of arches, poles and bunting and an additional £IOOO on illuminations in in connection with peace celebrations. Or O'Sullivan (one of the Labor membeis) objected to spending so much money in this way. He would sooner give £2OOO to the Returned Soldiers' Association. Or Herbert (another Labor member) said there were hundreds of parents in this eity who would hate the jubilation. Their sons would never Come back U them. He rather favored a competitive display by children and business concerns. Ho moved as an amendment, that the sum to be spent on Peace celebrations be £IOOO. The Mayor said the scheme could he utilised also for the visits of Lord Jollicoc ani the Prince of Wales.
The Committee's report was adopted with on-i dissentient.
