| PRESERVATION OF NATIVE FAUNA. By Telegraph.—Pre«« A9saci:.ti»n Christchurch, Last Night. | At the Science Congress to-day Mr. Edgar Steel pave an address on the preservation of native fauna, which, he said, was extremely important from a scientific point of view, its well as from a popular standpoint. The present Act, with its many amendments, designed to preserve bird life, Was practically useless, as it |(i>od at present. New Zealand sanctuaries were the means of preserving certain species of bird-life from extinction, but the speaker waa not certain that all the birds placed there would survive, owing to the competition. That did not alter the fact that the moat strenuous efforts should be made to give them a chance. The sanctuaries should be made as perfect as possible, and the birds given every chance. The.following resolution was carried: That this meeting requests the institute to combine with the Acclimatisation Society to urge on the Government the necessity for fresh legislation to preserve our native birds, and to take measures to promote education oil the subject in the State schools. EMPLOYING RETURNED SOLDIERS. • Wellington, Last Night. At the conference of the New Zealand Hardware Association a resolution was passed unanimously that all returning soldier hardware men would find their situations open for them, and that they would be reinstated in their old positions or others more suitable. At the Magistrate's Court Charles Fletcher, charged with selling adulterated olive oil and tincture of iodine which contained forty per cent, of methylated spirits, was fined £5 on each charge.
