FARM AND DAIRY.

4500 GUINEAS FOR A COW. When the sum of three thousand five hundred guineas was paid recently for Mr. F. li. May's Eske-lletty, it was thought that the high-water mark in the price for a Friesian cow was reached in England, especially as Eskc-llettv was the champion milk-cow ill Britain. But the price has easily been exceeded by another Fresian cow at a sale' in the second week of September. The sum of four thousand live hundred guineas (4500) was then paid for the imported cow Golf Sietska 10th. The cow was calved ill May, 1913, and was bred by Mr. H. L. de Vries, her dam being Sietske 2nd. The record of Golf Sietske 10th as a milk producer was given at the sale, She gave 9.0011b of milk with her first calf in fifty-two weeks, with an average of butter-fat of 4.00 obtained from ten tests. Another 9.201b of milk was given with her second calf in_ thirtyeight weeks, the average butter-fat being 4.02 in nine tests. From April to June in the present year she was giving 501b of milk as a daily average. Golf Sietske 10th was the great attraction of the sale of Mr. F. W. i), Robinson's stock held at Beccles. The purchaser of the cow was Mr. A. S. Bowlb_v, of Harlow. Descendants of imported stock at this sale also sold remarkably well. The sum of 2450 gns was given for a young bull (Clockhouse Victor, bred from imported parents). Other leading cows made the following prices: 7uogns, OOOgns, 480gns, and 400gns. The splendid average was realised of £237 13s for the eighty-seven lots, a total of £20,074 10s. What was practically an equally great average was made at another sale about the same time, that of Mr. H. W. Daking's Fresians, at Thorpe-le-Soken. The average for the seventy-four lots was £lB4 Is Bd, but the highest priced animal was only olOgns. Quite a number of cows sold in the region of 400gns.
