THE DEFENCE OF KUT GENERAL TOWNSHEND SPEAKS. London, Feb. 1. General Townshend in a speech at Norwich bitterly denied criticism on the surrender of Kut, in a newly published book by Mr Chandler, the official correspondent with the relief forces in Mesopotamia- General Townshend said that there vva3 grave reasons well known to the garrison but unknown to Mr Car.dler why he had csked for speedy relief. He had sent a message to the Com-maiider-'in-Chief that he would not remain in Kut, unle'ss guaranteed rs'ief within a month.
