BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Write Committee of the NewPlymouth Borough Council met last night. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) presided, and there were ■present Crs. W. A. Collis, W. P. Short, P. i Hill, and J. Clarke. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Griffiths. CORRESPONDENCE The Polynesian Society wrote in support of the Carnegie Institute Committee's application for the appointment of a curator and librarian and an assistant librarian.—Consideration of- the matter ,was deferred. A letter was received from the borough solicitors anent rating of the property on which the Roman Catholic Church and convent are situated, stating that certain sections used exclusively for the purposes of the church work were therefore exempt, and that others the uses of which were not so exclusive were liable for rates. Another letter from the borough solicitors stated that they were of opinion that the licensees who were occupiers of the whares and cottages on the railway reserve at Moturoa were not liable for rates in respect thereto. The TaiunaM Education Board wrote asking if the council would receive a 1 deputation from the board on Wednesday, February 12, in respect to the proposed exchange of the West End school site.—lt wa3 decided to hold the next meeting of the committee on that date and to veceive the deputation.
