Great crowds assembled early in the afternoon in Cieorge Square, Glasgow, blocking the tramway traffic. Their behaviour became menacing, necessitating tlie calling in of a force ol police mounted and loot, who were in readiness. A shower of misailui greeted the police, who drew batons and charged, clearing a space in front of the City Chambers. Fresh procession of strikers, headed by bands, arrived in the Square. The situation became ijjitical when tlie mob again attacked the police, throwing stones, bolts and rivets. The police, amid counter cheering and booing,'rushed forward, using their b&ttons' freely. A number of Australian soldiers and army officers, apparently on leave, joined the police, and helped again to clear the space during the attacks on the sherrif who was reading the Riot Act. — Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assoc. PERU RIOTERS FIRED ON. New York, Jan. 31. Dispatches from Lima say that the strikers who were rioting in northern Peru were fired on Kv the troops and several killed. There are general strikes at Trujillo and Salaverrv. Dispatches from Santiago say that the strike situation at Autofagasta is grave and troops have been dispatched there.
