A serious hitch occurred in connection ivitli the disembarkation of soldiers aboard the transport Briton yesterday, owing to ft shortage of something like iCitiO in the equipment. „ \ Court of inquiry was set up, and it was later announced by Lieut.-Colonel Holdemess, officer in charge of the troops, that no men would be allowed to land U!itil the kit was replaced. The prohibition against landing was subsequently rescinded, but it resulted in considerable muddle and delay. Colonel ChaiTey, officer commanding the Canterbury district, disclaimed, on 1,-ehPIT of his'staff, all blame for Ih.j I'onlrctemjiß, which is alleged to be due to orders issued to the oflieer commanding the troops aboard, and not carried out. He pointed out that the deficiency in (ho kit could have been ascertained weeks ego.
