THE MERCHANT MARINE AMERICA TO BE INDEPENDENT OF OTHER NATIONS.
Received Jan. 01, 2.20 p.m, New York, Jan. 20. A despatch from Paris states that Mr. Hurley lias announced that he ia going to the United States to examine the problems in connection with the American merchant marina He said the American people were determined to construct and maintain a merchant marine of sufficient size in order not to be dependent upon other nations for shipping to carry on American foreign trade.
SUBSIDISING- THE FARMERS. Received Jan. 31, 2.30 p.m. New York, Jan. 29. The New York Times' Washington correspondent says that the food administration has submitted to Congress a Bill appropriating 1250 million dollars, in order to assure that farmers will receive the Government's guaranteed wheat price of 220 cents a bushel.
A BIG NAVY URGED. \ Washington, Jan. 30. In urging naval expansions Admiral Mayo say 3 the Peace Conference is developing into a sewing circle. Now is the time the United States should build the greatest navy.—Aus. Cable Asnoc.
THE NAVAL PROGRAMME. Received Feb. 1, 12.30 a.m. London, Jan. 29. Mr. Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the United SStates navy, interviewed by the Daily Telegraph, stated that the building programme never intended to create a navy superior to the British.— Aun, N.Z. Cable Assoc.
