DISTRICT NEWS.
KAHOTU. (from Our Own Correspondent.) Rahotu seeing to be livening up at la3t after the epidemic. The accounts, otc., are cot settled yet, and the goods, beds, etc., are still locked up in the supper and men's dressing room of the hall. The flue seems to have quite left the district, although we are sorry to hear that Mrs A. Chapman has contracted the complaint in New Plymouth, where she was nursing her mother who was not well. We trust she will only have it mildly Miss Rita Jamison is convalescent in Hawera, after having been under an operation for appendicitis in New Plymouth hospital. Her friends wiH be pleased to learn of her quick recovery. The pictures and a travelling company were both well patronised last week, and Mrs Dew held a reception in the loft of her shed in honor of the two returned soldiers of her road, viz., Ptes. E. Hopkins and N Pepperill It is with pleasure we see Pte. W. James and A. Salisbury amongst us again, although it will be some time before Pte Salisbury will be able to use his hand.
The Wesleyan school picnic is to be held on Wednesday in Mr C. I'eiraarden's paddock. We have had so few days lit for outside pastime. On the following Wednesday the Church of England hope to hold their Thanksgiving Concert and Sale of Gifts The weather seems to suit the, grass and the turnip crops have struck well. Most of tho hay is now safely saved
The dairy factory has made to the suppliers its final payments in connection with last year's working Mrs W Harrison, head teacher, has been away with her daughter on holiday in the Gore district, and is expected home soon. It's to be hoped the school has been well disinfected so as to prevent the children being affected Word has been received from Major ICeenan that the Government will not recognise any wages over 10s a day for men warders working in local hospitals. Warders were engaged at 14s a day by the local committee, with the understanding that the Government would pay all debts incurred It seems peculiar that patients arc now to be charged after being led to believe no treatment in connection with tlio nursing? In reply to charged for. How can the Authorities legally charge patients for their treatment unless they are prepared to pay all other expenses caused through the running of the local hospitals, when even now they are objecting to pa; the carLire, hail-hire, labor, etc., etc., in " connection with the nursing? In reply to a telegram sent to the Hon. Mr Russell re financial arrangements for Emergency Hospital, the following was received from the Minister: '"The Government will pay all cost Emergency Hospitals provided the Hospital Board approves of the institution under control of approved nurse." Surely this reply should be sufficient proof that the Government is going to pay expenses.
