INFLUENZA IN AUSTRALIA.
THREE DEATHS YESTERDAY. CASES MORE SERIOUS. Melbourne, Jan. 29. There were three deaths to-day. The incoming cases are more serious. MASKS IN SYDNEY. FOUR PKESH CASES.
Received Jan. 29, 10.50 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 29. Pour fresh cases of influenza were reported to-day. One suspect collapsed in the street.
Masks have been issued to the police. The Government ha 3 ordered compulsory Wearing of masks from Monday. The penalty for non-compliance is arrest. POSITION IN THE ISLANDS. Wellington, Last Night. The Governor has received from the Governor of Fiji a cable, dated January 27, stating that there have been no fresh cases of influenza at Suva since December 28, and at Levuka since December 26. The country districts are rapidly clearing. The epidemic; is regarded as over, and the medical relief parties from Australia and New Zealand are leaving this week.
THE TRAM PASSENGERS TO WEAR MASKS. Sydney, Jan. 29. The triimwaymen have given the public two days wherein to secure masks. After that they will carry no unmasked passengers. additional inoculation depots were opened to-day, all being rushed.—Aub.-N.Z. , Cable Assn.
LAND TRAFFIC PROHIBITED.
Received Jan. 30, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, Jan. 29. Land traffic from Victoria to New South Wales, is prohibited from Thursday. Patrols are guarding the borders. Passengers are permitted to travel by steamer, provided they undergo quarantine upon arrival.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc.
