BOWLING.
TARANAIii TOURNAMENT, jj FIRST DAY'S PLAY. The annual TaranaJci bowling tournament, whicli opened at .New Plymouth jßsterday afternoon, was lavored with what might fce termed ideal weather for the commencement of play, there being not over-much sunshine ami no wind to interfere with deliveries.. The visitors were briefly welcomed by representatives of the local clubs, the president of the Centre (Mr. R. Lambie, Pfliama). speaking at the West End green, Mr. Frank Newell at New Plymouth, and Mr. J. D. Sole at Fitzroy. The umpires were Messrs S. Rundle (Fitzroy), C. Curtis (West End), and A. J. Morton (New Plymouth). The recorders were: Section A, S. Smith; B, H. Smart, C, A. K. Smart; D, J. Foy; E, J. D. Sole; F, F. Newell. AM the arrangements were satisfactory and worked smoothly throughout the afternoon. All the greens were in excellent order, reflecting much credit on the caretakers. The visitors were hospitably enter- i tained to afternoon tea. I
The Haw era (Parkinson) made a remarkable start in his first game, scoring 16 before liis opponent had any to his credit and winning easily. There was some particularly good individual play, well up to tournament form, but some of the heads before the skips went down were very ragged; doubtless this will be rectified as the tournament progresses. One of the surprises was the defeat of A. K. Smart by Jury, who was playing at his best and was supported by a reliable team. FITZROY GREEN 1 . K: SECTION A.
