fetratford, Jail. 27. (Excellent progress is being made with the tar-macadamising Of Broadway. The south end as far as the post office has been broken up and is being rolled, so it should not be long before this portion is completed. The absence of labor is very noticeably delaying the work. The concert at Manaia last week proved a big success. Several Stratford performers assisted and report having what one member called a "ripping time," There was a large audience. The Hawera items were contributed before the Stratford contingent arrived. Items by those from this district were: Mrs. McLaren (Toko), "Love's Own Iviss," "Up from Somerset," "Spotty"; Miss Round, recitation, "Rosa," and song, "Heaps of Lickins"; Mr. T. Ranford, "Shipmates of Mine," "Mate of Mine," "My Life for Thee," and "I Fear No Foe"; Mr. F. Ranford, "After Dinner Speeches," "All of a Ditherum," "When I was a Boy at School," etc. All the items were well received, the programme • being prolonged through recalls. The Stratford visitors speak highly of the platform work of Miss Collins, of Hawke's Bay. The performer is only a child, but her recitations were given with fine effect and deservedly brought recalls. The St. Mary's (Stratford) Boarding and Day School re-opens on February 12. There are still three or four vacancies, as the new buildings will accommodate a larger number than heretofore. Further particulars will be found in the advertisement in another column.
