THE MODERATE LEAGUE.

PUBLIC MEETING ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 23. It will interest readers to know that the Moderate League, under the auspices of which a public meeting is to be held in the Empire Theatre on Tuesday night, ,was originally formed to protect the interests of the moderate public as between the two extremes on the liquor question —the Prohibitionists on the one hand and tlie Trade on the other The league's committees are formed of prominent business men who have felt it to be their duty to endeavor to preserve the balance of sanity on licensing matters while at the same time moving for far-reaching reforms. As long ago as 1915 the league ap-' proaclied the Government with a complete programme of licensing reform, hut were requested by the Prime Minister, Mr. Massev, not to press the matter until the abnormal conditions of war-time had passed. The league is very strong in its disapproval of the subsequent action of the Government in yielding to the agitation of the Prohibitionists and plunging the country into the turmoil of a special referendum when internal unity is most heeded, and those who attend the meeting on Tuesday night will hear some straight talk from the speakers on recent happenings and their bearing on the general political aspect
