TURF TOPICS (Ry "Jtoturoa.")! There will ho rr.cinrr at Treniham and ul t'o>:tun to-day, an;! l' - lo -ii!l v"-lr;iiiie<l hordes aro engaged at bvji pia.ris the gatherings rti~ of co.<-ideiab!o ii>iore>l to Tair.iuki skirting Mk. Tli« Wellington flacing Club's - ii nnr : 'T me?iing. which opens to-day, will be concluded on Saturday. The Foxton meeting is a oneday all'air. The acceptances for i o l:: \ - s mees at Treniham are hardly up to expectations, blit quality rather than quantity is the main foil are of the card. 'iVenty have dropped out of the Cup race, hut the presence of well-performed eqnines like Client, Menelaus, Xobleinan, Jlaseot, fSnttJj, lied Kihbon, Kiimoon. and Punka makes up for the almost whole-ale scratching of the light-weight division. The Telegraph Handicap is much the eame, Croesus, Hymeslra, Xv.-iau, Nanua, Acre, Mich cela, Kilboyne, BoPeep, and Silver Link holding their ground, while much of the '"rubbish" has been allowed to drop out. Another big drawing card is the Wellington Staked, which wiil «ive Surveyor, Gleaming', Sun Dance. Crenider, and other top-ii<>l ehers a chance to measure strides. Good fields are cn-sged in the minor events, and the gathering should be a most successful one Ihroughout Proceedings open with tin l Apprentice Handicap, one mile, lor which the consistent Consultation should start a good favorite, and the Nursery Handicap, run over four furlongs, looks a fair thing for Sun Dance. Kiltess and Melee may carry the bundle in the Anniversary Welter, one mile, and the Trial Plate, seven furiongs, will see smart performers like Hurry Up, Robur, and Hyiuarty solidly backed. Euro's detection from the Wellington Cup\ was a body blow to the double punters, and now Punki, Kilmoen, and ileneiaus are the prime favorites 'the Daks winner. Punka, is undoubtedly well treated, but we often see classic winners beaien in handicap events Kiimoon reads as well as anyth-ng, and 011 Auckland form should be equal to leading Punka home Menelans has the advantage of Gray's horsemanship, but his stabie.Tiate, Mascot, has more to recommend her on recent performance.; Kiimoon and -Mascot should be the littesfc horses in the field. The Wellington Slakes, live furlongs, looks only a matter of health f..- Surveyor. Gloaming may he amongst the runners, but he may not be aide io gei: O <U his feet quickly enough to have a e'liaSce wiOi the two-year-olds In iaet horses like Kihnoon and Silver L:i:k have rf,own Van, the way for several hirlorgs recently. a race it may lie the Maiden Hack Race. Moutoa Camp (if reserved) will carry a lot of money in the Awahou Welter, 'in which the opposition is rather weak,. rikl Starengo is in such line form at present that lie may 1 again finish in front of Ilawakore in the Anniversary Handicap.
Vance and Gold Problem are quick beginners engaged in the Dash Hack; Handicap, and '.Tirana may lie equal to stalling off the opposition in the Her-ring-ton Welter. Winning Shot, who was sold to an Auckland Inner, was taken noi'Lli by W Sharp hist week. The Signor mare is well treated at Takapuna, and should goon get amongst the winners;.
Windorah won two races in succession a the Whangarei meeting last week, rather a rare occurrence nowadays. An Auckland writer finds a parallel ease away back in 1904, when the Pony Annoyed won the Pony Handicap with IC*4, and the next event, the .Takapuna. .I.C. Handicap, immediately afterwards. In the latter race she led most of the way, and won easily in 2min. 9see.—a good "go" for the Takapuna course in those days.
Last week "Moturoa" renewed acquaintance with the picturesque little course at Takapuna, and was struck with the great improvement effected in the racing track there. The con rue now extends to one mile, and the turns are banked up well, making racing very safe, while the runners are easily kept on the rails throughout. A splendid growth of grass and a smooth surface right to the outside rails shows the good care expended on the track, but the recent spell of •dry weather has made the going somewhat hard. No work is permitted there after 9 a.m., when the track is well watered, but a good beach close at hand is being taken advantage of iby several trainers
Amongst the visiting horses at present located at Takapuna are Form Up, Cvrisian, Princess Charni'im', Loyal Arch and G: zique. The grandstand and other lawn appointments at Takapuna have not been improved much during recent years, but now that the war is over a big programme is probable. The outside public is well catered for, a fine concrete series of terraces on the hill giving them a splendid view of the racing from end to oiid. The Takapuna meeting iB set down for January 29, 30, and February J.
