Returning soldiers are due home this evening. Amongst those expected are Privates iiurgham, (Silver, Wright, Marfell, and O'Connor, all of this district. Matriculation examination for the University of New Zealand commenced to-day Those sitting here assembled at the Parish Hall, the Key C. W- Howard supervising. Mratford shopkeepers are considering the question oi cutting down the hours of Saturday, and a meeting will be held during the week to decide the mattter. A Midhirst farmer waited on "Your Own" and stressed the point that little sonsidcration is shown the soldiers now returning. A recent contingent journeying from Wellington found the only signs of a welcome were at Feilding and Hawera, particularly the latter town. The speaker considered that, seeing some of the boys who have yet to return are those who have teen away right from the beginning of the struggle, they should receive a little more thoughtfulness from the general public. He al9o voiced his disappointment that at the little weleme home functions in their own town the duties were left to a few, whereas it was only a fair and proper thing that all should come forward and give the men who lava bwn fighting for them a right hearty welcome. B- Kirkby (Tuna) This afternoon, at Midhirst, Mr«. S. Cook, a very old identity, was interred in the presence of many relatives. Deceased, with heT husband, arrived in Canterbury about 40 years back, afterwards coming to tTiis district. Her husband predeceased her about eight years ago. She leaves two aons and two daughters, all grown up. to mourn their 1o9»- Ever of ft kindly disposition, there are nianv who will read these lines with regret at the demise of one who strove to do her best .
