Under tire keying "Star Clamber Methods'' the Auckland Slur rub;; it into racing ch.bs for the smother-up tactics which have characterised recent racing inquiries, and quotes (he Auckland RailWay Handicap troubi?'and a certain Wellington disqualification as "just about the limit." It is common property that the judicial stewards oi' the Auckland Racing Club heard charges, and counter-charges, relative to r, certain horse in the Railway Handicap, and there were allegations of an r.ttempt to ".itilTen" one of the favovi;c3. After a lengthy inquiry the Press were informed that no action would be taken A fortnight after the meeting the Club, through its secretary, informed the Press that the full finding of the judicial stev.aids in connection with "certain happenings" in the liailway Handicap included considerably more than was conveyed to the Press during the meeting. The ofiicial note then continues:—'''What readied the Pre;.s representatives through the official channel seems to have been merely ail interim finding, the full text of the views of the stewards involving distinct disapprobation. to put it as 'mildly as possible, of tlie conduct of two owners of competitors in tl.c race mentioned, each of whom admitted having had very intimtte conversations prior to the race with a certain jockey, the rider of a horse not belonging to either of them The disopproval of the stewards has been formally conveyed to the owners referred to." The secretary of the A.R.C. is particular to point out that "there was no secrecy in the matter," yet the names of those concerned arc, withheld, just as the name of the person disqualified by the Wellington Racing Club is withheld. Where the "big men" of the Turf are concerned tlnre seems to be a lot of influence used, and it is just a question how long -the public (which is heavily taxed to keep the sport booming) is going to stand these star chamber methods of holding inquiries Of course tlie big clubs don't care for inquiries and scandal, and it is general knowledge that l.gger "ramps" nmv be lerpetrated on metropolitan courses than would be allowed by minor clubs The Auckland Slav was right in denouncing'the present method of holding inquiries, and will have the backing of the Press rr.d sporting public of the Dominion
