A THEATRE MAGNATE.
ESTIMATED LONDON INVESTMENTS £5,000,000. London, Jan. 16 Mr Jack Joel's theatrical activities are creating widespread interest in London. It is understood he is behind Mr Alfred Butt. Mr Joel already has a greater or smaller interest in six West End theatres, and he recently provided the money for the purchase of the seventh with a view to rebuilding, also to erect an entirely new theatre. It is believed the last two ventures will involve an outlay of millions, It seems certain he can acquire Drury Lane if he cares to, as he is already one of the largest shareholders. It is estimated that his investments in London theatres amount to about £j,000,000 and that they are constantly appreciating with the current of the great theatrical boom. Mr Joel recently acquired a large holding in a leading catering firm, probably with a view of controlling the Criterion Restaurant, a leading theatregoers' resort.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. [Mr Joel is a partner in the South African diamond firm of Barnato Bros.]
